This is more likely a firewall, network policy, DCOM, or remote WMI configuration issues. Start here - http://help.spiceworks.com/Why+do+I+have+so+many+%22Unknown%22+devices%3F

I don't mean when trying to SCAN other PC's.. I mean when trying to start spiceworks as a service.. it doesn't let me because it says "could not authenticate user".. .like it wants me to give it...

oops - sorry about not reading what you said closer.We haven't seen this or had anyone report it. Are you using a Domain Controller with Active Directory, or is this all local?

a few suggestions-have you tried restarting spiceworks and trying again?-have you cleared your browser cache and tried again?-have you got the right keyboard/language option set (did this other day...

Well I'm running it on WIndows 2000 Pro, not XP. I have tried restarting both spiceworks AND the PC it's running on. Same problem.

Although we have many people running Spiceworks on Windows 2000, we don't have a machine in house running that O/S for testing (hence why we don't officially support it yet). My guess is that we messed...

I am running it as a service on a Windows 2000 Server with no problems.

One more person in the line of failing W2K server....I also get the "could not authenticate user" when trying to set is as a service.This on a virtual machine on a VMWare.bge

Add one more running W2k Pro, in a workgroup, no less, with the "Could not Authenticate User" error. Checked the local security policy, and the account in question does have "Log on as a service" rights.

Still nothing?Have done everything I can think of to get it to work - have SW on Win2K3 working fine as a service, checked all user rights etc. but this is obviously not something us users are going to...
